Thanks for your reply. I used winpt 1.0.0pre0 version to set a 7-bit passphrase. Since then I'm using WinPT successfully. I think I'll stick to the 7-bit passphrase as long as I'm not sure how gpg deals with character set. Using an 8 bit passphrase set with WinPT it's only possible to decrypt with gpg if that passphrase is converted to utf8 and piped into gpg (and that'd annoying).

Hmm, this is always the problem with charset specific problems. Propably it's the best to compile a version without utf support. Then change your passphrase to a 7-bit passphrase. Then replace the winpt.exe with the actual 1.0.1 version and then change your passphrase to 8-bit again.

I think I found the corrensponding source code location: it should be in file wptPassphraseDlg.cpp
where the following line changed:
p = m_strdup (pass.pwd);
was replaced by
p = native_to_utf8 (pass.pwd);

So, previously no conversion was done. Now it's from windows (default cp1252) to utf8. Because the passphrase has been established with cp1252 it can't work with the conversion.

The last working winpt version is winpt-1.0.0-pre0.

Now it's definitly that it's an WinPT issue. After installing gpg4win 1.0.7 I juste renamed WinPT and copied version 0.11.12 into the corresponding directory. Decryption running WinPT 1.0.1 fails but works with 0.11.12.

I just installed gpg4win 1.0.6 on a fresh WinXP, same results. Then I installed the very last gnupt package (2.7.6) and running winpt (0.11.3-cvs) from that package decryption works fine along with gpg from gpg4win package.
Hence my conclusion is that it's a WinPT issue (might be --passphrase-fd paramter?).

As far as I can see, it might be an issue with
the charset of the passphrase. I suggest you post
a mail on gnupg-users.

Decryption with gpg 1.4.5 works if I set an environment variable containing the passphrase and then call gpg with --passphrase-fd 0 option and pipe variable's value to gpg.
So, where's the difference?

I'm quite confused. I found the site for the previous gpg4win downloads. I went back through the history down to gpg4win 1.0.2 and installed gpg only for each version. None of them works. I checked again and all keyrings (--homedir) with gpg 1.4.2.1 are working. Something must have changed from that version up to now.
BTW: why decryption within gpgol and gpgee of gpg4win 1.0.6 are working?

I ran WinPT with debug option, but the log doesn't contain any useful information (see below). I saved the clupboard content to a file and tried to decrypt it with gpg (v1.4.5) resulting into the same error. Using gpg version 1.4.2.1 decryption works fine.
As I stated before: I assume it's a gpg 1.4.5 issue, because it used to work up to 1.4.4. Just to mention it for completeness: there some special characters (latin1 character set) in the passphrase.
In'm not sure what you mean if you are asking how many secret keys I have. I have to keys both associated with 2 and the other with 3 email addresses. But the keyring is protected by one passphrase.

BTW, I also opened a bug on g10code BTS.

Here is WinPT.log containing one decryption sequence (3 trials):

Please could you run winpt --enable-debug?

And then scan winpt.log for sentensive information
and delete them if you think this is needed. Maybe you could also see yourself what's wrong.

And WinPT just say "bad passphrase"? Another user reported a similar problem, but I was never able to reproduce it. How much secret keys do you have?

Please also try to save the clipboard data and
try gpg the_file.asc and see if you can decrypt
it there.

I suppose that it's a bug in the latest version of gnupg (1.4.5), because I installed gpg contained in CygWin (1.4.2-1) and using the very same keyrings I'm able to decrypt messages.

Doublechecked decryption using gpgol.
Decrypting an email with gpgol works (according to log), but the plaintext isn't displayed in Outlook.
Copying the very same encrypted text into the clipboard and decrypting it with WinPT however doesn't work, because of wrong passphrase. But the passphrase was the correct one.

I just encrypted the clipboard with WinPT and tried to decrypt the encyrpted text. But WinPT complains that the Passphrase is invalid. Even decryption with gpg.exe doesn't succeed.

Encrpyting and decrypting a file with GpgEe works fine. Both use the same keyrings.
I'm using latest version of gpg4win 1.0.6.

Any ideas why WinPT/gpg decryption doesn't work?
And why gpgee does?
