Monitor Forum | Start New ThreadGnuPG v2.4.2 [ Reply ] By: Dom Hughes on 2023-06-04 08:17 | [forum:8905] |
The SUMo software monitor http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?sumo has been telling me about a new GnuPG version for some time now. The current version on https://gnupg.org/download/index.html is v2.4.2. Should we be updating to this version, even though Gpg4win hasn't been updated? Thanks! |

I'm not sure if updating only GnuPG while also having Gpg4win installed would lead to problems but you don't have to update GnuPG. If there were security issues in GnuPG which would be solved in a new version of GnuPG then Gpg4win would also receive an update.

By: Bernhard Reiter on 2023-06-05 11:16[forum:8907]
Hi,
it usually is okay to install the GnuPG installiert over the Gpg4win installer, if it is the same major version. So Gpg4win 4.1.0 comes with GnuPG 2.4.0 which is major version 2. So using 2.4.2 should be fine.
But yes, a Gpg4win release is forthcoming (as announced in the GnuPG 2.4.2 mail).

Bernhard

TPM support [ Reply ] By: Dingwen Wang on 2022-04-21 00:58 | [forum:8377] |
GnuPG 4.3 added support for loading private keys to TPM: https://gnupg.org/blog/20210315-using-tpm-with-gnupg-2.3.html However, when I tried to move my key to TPM using the `keytotpm` command, I received > gpg: error from TPM: Not supported My system have AMD fTPM enabled and I am currently using BitLocker with TPM 2.0. |

I guess you should try and write to the Gnupg-users mailing list (https://lists.gnupg.org/mailman/listinfo/gnupg-users). For GnuPG-specific topics it's sometimes more fitting.

Hi,
right now I'm not sure if the SKS server and GNU still allow the search function and cannot check. To give you a first hint:
Try gnupg on the command line and add verbosity and diagnostic messages to it (and dirgmngr) to find out, what is going on.
--recv-keys is usually the option I use for a pubkey I know. Does it work with your server?
(BTW: many people use hockeypuck these days.)

Command Line Decrypting without PassPhrase [ Reply ] By: Jeremiah Campbell on 2023-05-11 12:49 | [forum:8893] |
I recently had to move my automated powershell tasks from one VM to newer device. On the previous device (Win10) the following line worked WITHOUT needing to enter the password every time. (FYI, the material is sensitive, I cannot use a key w/out a password/phrase) gpg --output "C:\working\Test.pdf" --decrypt "C:\working\Test.pgp" On the new device (Win Server 2019), the password dialog frequently is required. Occasionally it's in the GPG cache, but usually it'll ask for the pass phrase. Evidently when I originally wrote these scripts I neglected to include notes for the gpgconf and/or options I used to achieve this goal. And I havn't found any clues in my old backups either. I tried something new, by adding it to the command line, like so... gpg --passphrase-fd "MY_PHRASE_HERE" --batch --output "C:\working\Test.pdf" --decrypt "C:\working\Test.pgp" Unfortunately this line will just hang up the command. I have to use CTRL-Break to return to the command prompt. I tried putting the phrase into a file instead... but that's not working either. Besides, entering the passphrase in the batch file or other file isn't the most secure method. I know I found a way around this before, but I can't remember how I did it. Any thoughts? To manage keys for other users please manage them as a normal user and copy the 'AppData\Roaming\gnupg' directory with proper permissions. Are you sure that you want to continue?" But I run Kleopatra as a normal user. Moreover I am not able to "opy the 'AppData\Roaming\gnupg' directory with proper permissions." Please help. Thanks. p.s. I click on continue and Kleopatra seems to work correctly, but I'd like to understand this warning anf get rid of it. |

You could also try to reinstall Gpg4win but be sure to backup your keys. When you install Gpg4win make sure that you don't run the installer nor Kleopatra as administrator. As one can read here (https://dev.gnupg.org/T5212#144782) it suffices to run it once as admin and you always get this message.

RE: cannot run as administrator [ Reply ]
By: Andre Heinecke on 2023-05-09 06:31[forum:8882]
You are not running Kleopatra as a normal user. This message pops up only after it queries the system that you have administrative privileges.
Probably you disabled User Account Control altogether? This is a very unsafe way to operate an endpoint and that is why Kleopatra warns. Is it safe as everything else you do on the computer in that case, meaning it is not safe because everything you do as user runs with full permissions. But this is not a Windows Administrators Forum. A problem would only occur if you run Kleopatra "sometimes" with elevated privileges and sometimes not. But when you always run it elevated nothing will break.

> already found and read that but I didn't understand if keeping that pop up warning will be safe or not.
We cannot answer that with certainty, because it depends on what "safe" means for you. (That is a general problem with security, it is not on or off like a switch.)
By disabling UAC you deviate from the default that your operating system vendor recommends, and by using system privileges always, you are running your system in difference to many recommendations. Both remove layers of protection, so unless you have a very good reason, disabling those features will make you less "safe".)
Hope this help already! ;)
Otherwise you can consult general recommendation about administrating a Windows operating system.

"Should I change it?"
Yep :) Because otherwise all programs that you run have all permissions but you usually can't trust every program. It doesn't matter if you are the only user.
"Will it solve the issue?"
I guess you will have to reinstall Gpg4win again after that but than it should solve the issue.

By: Bernhard Reiter on 2023-04-21 11:54[forum:8867]
Hi Marco,
as far as I know, it isn't.
(It is a huge technical challenge for several reasons:
One is that a search index would need to be encrypted with the same private key as the emails you would want to search and this index would be to be connected with Outlooks search to make it reasonably fast. Otherwise each mail would need to be decrypted each time it is searched through, including many crypto operations.)
Fun fact: We had implemented such proof of concept a solution in the KMail/Kontact Groupware application many years ago, this never made it into production I think.

Hi,
did you yourself encrypt these messages? Then you have to use the same key for decryption as you did for the encryption. If you deleted or lost the private key that you used for encryption than there is no chance to decrypt the files.

RE: No Secret Key [ Reply ]

What do you mean by "changed"? Did you change the key? Then it is clear that the decryption does not work.
If a file was encrypted by key A then it has to be decrypted with the same key A. If you create a new key B you cannot decrypt files with it which were encrypted with key A.
When you get the error "No secret key" that means that you still have to import the correct key.

PGP-2 public key issue [ Reply ] By: brian jones on 2023-04-18 21:17 | [forum:8860] |
I have version 4.1 installed on my windows server. I have a keyring that was copied over from a previous server, version unknown. I have a key in this pubring that Kleopatra is identifying as a PGP-2 key and as such seems to be denying and all existence of this key. When I export all public keys and try importing them there is always one key not being imported. This key worked for me in March but in April it is not working any more. The message is that the key cannot be found. I am at a loss as to what happened. I did not upgrade my version of GPG. I have the same version on multiple servers and workstations, and they all are experiencing the same issue. Any insight or guidance on this please? Customer is obviously not pleased with the answer of I know your key worked before and it just does not now, and I do not know why. Thanks |

Encrypt in Kleopatra on Windows 11 is broken. [ Reply ] By: Jason Croghan on 2023-03-28 20:28 | [forum:8825] |
I'm quite tech savvy to start. I installed the latest version of Kleopatra and created a new RSA 4,096 key with pass phrase. Another system used my public key to send me a message, put that message in a file and decrypted the file successfully, ok we're off. So to test this I decided I should encrypt and decrypt a message to myself to make sure everything is working. I encrypt the clipboard and select myself as the recipient, I paste that into a file to verify it looks good, BEGIN PGP ENCRYPTED MESSAGE, ok so far so good. I go back to Kleopatra and in the Clipboard menu decrypt is grey. I try to decrypt the file, no it tells me it cannot determine what it is? Now, if I use my public key to encrypt using a website (https://8gwifi.org/pgpencdec.jsp), I can decrypt that output from a file or from the clipboard in Kleopatra! I tried the same website, encrypt and decrypt using my public and private keys and that works fine. I encrypt with Kleopatra and try to decrypt using the site... nope it will not decrypt the text encrypted with Kleopatra. It also works fine in GnuPGK which I found online, except if I encrypt with Kleopatra that won't decrypt it either. The text from Kleopatra encrypt looks like this: -----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE----- <ENCRYPTED TEXT> -----END PGP MESSAGE----- It does not include version info. I tried an older version of Kleopatra, 3.1.16, same thing. I am selecting RSA and RSA+ when I create my key but I don't think the key is the issue as it works fine on the website. EDIT: If I use the Notepad feature in Kleopatra it encrypts and decrypts fine. If I encrypt with the clipboard Encrypt feature it does not decrypt in Notepad or from Clipboard, if I encrypt with Notepad it will decrypt from clipboard. Encrypt in Kleopatra on Windows 11 is broken. |

Yeah my own key, the same one that works on the website and GnuPGK.
The Clipboard->Decrypt menu is grey when I use Clipboard->Encrypt, paste it into Notepad and copy it to make sure it's correct, and if I paste it to a file it tells me the file isn't recognised when I use File->Decrypt and asks me if it is a detached signature or an archive. These both work fine if I encrypt using the same key and GnuPGK or the site.
This is the content it says it cannot decrypt from a file and clipboard decrypt is grey.

When I copy your content I can use the Decrypt entry in the clipboard menu. Then is just says "Decryption failed: No secret key." When I put the content into a file it's the same result. It's like I would expect it.
It must be something else. Kleopatra is definitely working. Maybe you save the key in the file with a special encoding? Or are you using other tools that have access to your clipboard?

--rfc4880 option doesn't work after upgrading from gpg4win 4.0.3 to 4.1.0 [ Reply ] By: Roel Green on 2023-03-22 14:32 | [forum:8814] |
We encrypt some files with the option --rfc4880, because a particular recipient got the error "unknown packet type 20". This worked, the files could be decrypted. But after we upgraded gpg4win from version 4.0.3 to version 4.1.0 this doesn't work anymore. We use the same command in our script but the recipient gets the error "unknown packet type 20", just like before we added the --rfc4880 option. We deinstalled version 4.1.0 and reinstalled version 4.0.3 and now the recipient can decrypt the files again. So I think this is a bug in version 4.1.0 of gpg4win. Is this a bug and is there another way to get the same results (as with the --rfc4880 option) which still works in version 4.1.0? Thanks for the reply Christoph.
We asked the reciept what they use, they use the C# library bouncycastle.
They say that they strictly follow the RFC4880 standard and that the "packet type 20" isn't part of the standard.
That is why we made a version of our script for them with the --rfc4880 option. This worked, but this didn't work anymore after the upgrade.
We just also tested it with the option --openpgp, but this also doesn't work with the new version.
Other recipients don't have any problem.

I created this bug report: https://dev.gnupg.org/T6422. There you can see when the developers ork on this case. If you create an account on that website you can also subscribe to that case and receive emails when there are any updates.
It's true: Packet type 20 is not part of RFC4880 (https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc4880/) which is from 2007. But there is an updated standard in work (https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-koch-openpgp-2015-rfc4880bis/) and it has some additional features. It seems that other clients have already implemented these features (GnuPG belonging to them) but that library hasn't implemented them yet.
It may seem a bit weird that features are already implemented that are written down in a draft only but it's often that way that there are reference implementations before there is a standard.

Thanks Christoph! The answer from the bug report solved the problem. I don't know why we got the problem after the upgrade to version 4.1.0, maybe in the old version the --rfc4880 compatability option did override the preference system, but I'm not sure.
The public key we got from the recipient had indeed "A2" as a prefence listed. As the compatibility option doesn't override the preference from the key we used "packet type 20". We asked the recipient to remove the "A2" preference as described in the answer:
