Having generated a PGP message and sent it to a vendor, is there any way of verifying that what the code says is actually what I wrote in plain text? I have a copy of the gobbledygook that the PGP generator spat out.

Good question! Crittically important! Same here; and, I have little doubt, also to probably all us new users.
Sure, you can always select “encrypt to self” which is the default in kleopatra and then you decrypt the message. E.g. in Kleopatras Notepad after encrypting it and you will get the same result as anyone else decrypting this message.
